My Sugar Free Life - Best Ever You
by Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino on January 29th, 2012
This morning a Best Ever You reader sent me an email. She asked "What are you doing? I also need to lose weight and keep sugar out of my diet."(Well....since you (and others) are asking...)
I am on Day 7 of Best Ever You's Get Healthy Forever" plan. We tried it out last year and three of us had some amazing success. So this year, Sara Sullivan and I have written some thoughts down on how to get healthy and have shared them with you.
Women (and men too) are MASTERS at being so hard on themselves! We have so much internal chatter at the mirror, at the wedding, at the birth, after the birth(s), at reunions, while we are on dates, in the dressing rooms trying on jeans or swimsuits... you get the idea.... We beat ourselves up much too often.
I thought I'd take a moment with you to share some of my pregnancy photos and a photo of me now. Why? Well for one, I can't believe my kids are now 10-12-14-16, but also to show you how much we go through and how much our bodies go through and to remember to take time to love yourself, be proud of yourself and give it your best.
If you spend time beating yourself up, you are taking time away from being positive and living a productive, happy life.
Pregnancy 1 : 1995Start weight: 125
End Weight: 240
Baby Induced due to Blood Pressure issues 4 weeks early. He was 7lbs 6oz.
Age: 26
Pregnancy 2: 1997Start weight: 160
End Weight: 250
Baby induced due to Blood Pressure issues 2 weeks early. He was nearly 9 lbs. We both almost died in childbirth.
Age 28
Let me pause for a moment and tell you that in between these pregnancies I was Divorced, remarried, pregnant and had developed Anaphylaxis -( food allergies) and had been resuscitated in 1998 from Anaphylaxis.
Pregnancy 3: 1999Starting weight: 125
Ending Weight 165
Baby induced and pregnancy watched very closely due to pregnancy complications in 1997. Baby induced 3 weeks early, 7lbs 1oz
Age 30
I was a lot skinnier during this pregnancy from sheer stress, I believe.
Pregnancy 4: 2001Start Weight: 135
End Weight: 180
Baby induced 2 weeks early. Watched very closely again due to previous pregnancy complications.
Age 32

This is me NOW. 2012. I'm 42, still 5'3" :) and at a weight of 148 - 152 pounds. I bounce between that weight depending on what I eat.
So now for 7 days, I've been on what I've affectionately labelled as "sugar detox" for me, since that is my trouble area. I don't eat a lot of processed foods due to food allergies already, but when I find something I can eat and not be allergic to, such as chocolate chips, chocolate ice cream, etc... I EAT IT.
Well, I'm changing that.
My goal is to lose 20 pounds and change the way I eat forever. I feel like diabetes is just around the curve if I don't start being more mindful. I also feel like at age 42, menopause is starting to creep in and I don't want to add extra weight there also.
But, what I wanted to add that last year, following our diet, I took off and kept off 20 pounds, so this is that next 20.
There's no wedding, no pregnancy, no swimsuit buying, no jeans that don't fit, no "event" surrounding my need to do this. It's just ME and my intution telling me so.
Please send a comment or email to me, if you would like to follow or get some help! We're here for you! (and I need the support too!!)

Elizabeth the two of us are much the same. I'm 5'1 1/2 145 - 150 had one birth almost lost us both because of blood p. started prag. At 95 lbs at my son's birth I was 165 - 169 know each birth could never get my weight down, but never to my goal weight. I am now at my under 150

I have something to offer here, Elizabeth, though I can’t speak about pregnancy, not first-hand anyway! Everything you say is great, and as usual, your willingness to “be the learning” is striking. Here’s another piece you might like to consider...
There’s a mind-body connection that’s worth paying attention to.
Let me share my own experience, if I may. At first, you may think this has little to do with shedding the pounds...
Last year was pretty tough, or at least I framed it in my head as struggle, and I put on weight through eating at my desk with the result that just before Christmas I was the heaviest I had ever been. Not really drastic, but out of shape, and I was aware I needed to cut down.
About then, I was working on my goals for 2012. Where did I want to be at the end of the year? As usual, I got all numerical about it, and was debating to myself what was realistic. (Business and professional background conditions us to anticipate being held accountable I guess.)
Then it dawned on me....
Knowing that I needed to manage my mental state much more effectively than before, I realized I’d do much better to visualize a 2012 that I couldn’t possibly cavil about—progress on all fronts beyond all realistic expectation.
And then, and most importantly, act as if that’s already happening.
That puts your head in a different place for sure. And you attract the people and things into your life that help bring you what you want.
Working on your own, I reckon rather than setting realistic goals, it’s much more important to have a compelling vision, to manage your state, and so manifest what you desire.
And coming back to weight loss, here’s the interesting thing...
I notice that now I’m not eating the snacks while I’m working. Because my head’s in a better place, I don’t want them. They just don’t have the same appeal. And it feels like a physical shift, by which I mean my body isn’t interested.
I keep being surprised by the power of the mind-body connection, but I shouldn’t be and nor should you.
So I suggest...
Visualize a future state that is so good that when it arrives you can’t possible quibble about it (which may involve accepting some things you can’t change). Then act as if the state is already here. That’ll have lots of benefits: You’ll attract who and what you need to succeed, you’ll manifest the success you want...
...and you’ll eat less.
Hope that helps.

I am not sure I can comment on my own blog. Let's see if it work... David. I'll write my next blog post or one soon about my vision board. I totally agree on vision needed. Thank you for writing this because I appreciate the support and ideas tremendously.

Making it a lifestyle choice instead of losing a few pounds for an event is such a great idea and wonderful tip to share with your readers. I am only a few years into changing my lifestyle and have lost 120 pounds by making it a new lifestyle and am still learning new things every day. I turned 48 this week and feel like I have my life back. I wish you so much success! :)
