Six years ago, I was invited to speak about entrepreneurship on behalf of the SBA to 500 women in El Paso, Texas with the keynote address by Joan Rivers, who shared her story as an entrepreneur. It was a great experience, and I met Rebeca Perez who had a dream of creating a reading literacy program in her community.
Rebeca signed up for my live course, Get Clarity Now, where she began to put the pieces together to turn her dream into reality.
A few months ago, Rebeca reached out to me, excited to share her new program EduMobile, a non-profit providing supplemental education to at-risk students who are struggling to succeed in school. I immediately connected her with Pamela Good, founder of Beyond Basics, a successful reading literacy program here in the Detroit area.
Last week, Rebeca Perez came to Detroit for a tour and to learn more about the Beyond Basics process and to attend a fundraiser where she was able to meet donors and supporters of the Beyond Basics reading literacy program.
I’m so excited to know women who have been able to courageously take their dreams and create programs that are truly making a difference in their communities.
I totally agree with Erma Bombeck when she said:
There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, ‘Yes, I’ve got dreams, of course I’ve got dreams.’ Then they put the box away and bring it out once in awhile to look in it, and yep, they’re still there. These are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, ‘How good or how bad am I?’ That’s where courage comes in.
