How Do I Sell Myself Without Sounding Like I am Bragging?

Updated: Apr 12, 2019

How to Sell Yourself Without Sounding Like You Are Bragging!

Especially, if you are in the market to land a new job or advance your career this is will be quite relevant and important.

How to Sell Yourself without Sounding like Your Bragging

This just might be the $1,000,000 question right?! There is a real art to this. BUT the good news is it can be done. And I will show you how. This is another piece to how to effectively communicate your professional story puzzle. When you know how to sell yourself without bragging, you can nail the job interview, share you genius in any situation confidently and comfortably and know what to include on your About Me page and LinkedIn Summary.

As a career transitions coach, I find that clients are most anxious for the job interview. At first they worry if they will be invited for an interview and then they worry about actually going on one.

It is hard to predict what you will be asked, I wish I had the crystal ball. However, there are some common questions we can prepare for.

Here is what I do know to be true, that works for my clients EVERY TIME, when you can confidently and effectively communicate your professional story-- your value, your why...YOU can answer any question they ask and nail the interview.

MY TOP TIPS:

>Remember you are wearing your professional hat and in the professional lane. >Everything you are talking about should be in relationship to your professional life, experience and skill set.

>While it might seem like the interviewer is interested in YOU, REALLY she is interested in how YOU benefit the organization. SO make sure you show how your value will benefit that organization in every answer.

>Do your homework on the organization but don’t over prepare. Be authentic. Listen. >Make sure you are answering the question asked, not the question you want to answer.

=>In order to sell yourself, AND NOT SOUND LIKE YOUR ARE BRAGGING, you need to know what you want and what your clear path and pitch is. (ie: your why - your elevator speech) - Make sure you speak with gratitude and show your efforts and give concrete examples that demonstrate your accomplishments.

--> Who are you? What do you do? Where do you want to go? What are you looking for? And WHY?

→ And why are you the ideal one to fill this gap in their organization - interview.

For you About Me page or LinkedIn Summary - you want to share why are you the one some is looking for or the one someone needs.

...You need to know your audience. You need to be paying attention to whom you are speaking to and what platform you are using.

COMMON QUESTIONS / TIPS TO NAIL THE INTERVIEW:

-> The Tell Me About Yourself Question -- isn’t asking you about your personal life or personal story. This is your golden opportunity to share your professional story. USE IT!

-> The Why Are You Interested in the Job Question - isn’t to hear you focus on what the job will provide you and to hear you reshare the job description. This is your moment to show why you were excited about this posting and how your mission and skill set aligns with the company’s. How your unique way can move the company’s needle forward.

-> Don’t fall in the “Why Are You Leaving Your Current Job” Pitfall - they don’t really care why. They just want to see if you are going to bad mouth your current employer. Are YOU? HINT: DO NOT! I know, you might be justified. If you want to be hired then DO NOT! Better answer, I am looking for new challenges, I am ready for a change. I am looking for career advancement.

=> ALWAYS Show your value with examples from your portfolio of work experience. Use these in your answers as often as you can.

=>Be concise and stay focused. Be engaged and listen.

=>Create short snippets of your success stories, think sound bites.

=>Show them through confidently and effectively communicating your professional story why you are uniquely qualified and the best candidate for the position.

=>Be authentic. Be relatable. (And in the case of your LinkedIn summary and About Me page, often showing struggle in your story - how you got to where you are not and what you overcame can be very powerful. Not usually the case in the interviewing process.)
