Michelle Bryant Johnson on Resilience, Mindset, Grief, and Moving Forward Through Uncertainty

Life can change in an instant.

A job loss. A major transition. A season of grief. A moment that completely reshapes the future you thought you were building.

And while many people appear to keep moving forward on the outside, internally they are often navigating uncertainty, emotional exhaustion, fear, self-doubt, heartbreak, and the difficult work of rebuilding confidence and clarity one day at a time.

Michelle Bryant Johnson understands that journey personally.

An award-winning mindset expert, executive coach, leadership professional, and grief and healing advocate, Michelle has spent more than 25 years helping individuals and organizations navigate leadership, emotional wellness, workplace culture, resilience, personal growth, and transformation. Following the devastating loss of her husband, Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr., to COVID, Michelle transformed her grief into purpose by creating the SPARK framework — a practical and empowering approach designed to help others move through adversity with greater clarity, healing, confidence, and intention.

At Best Ever You, we often talk about resilience, emotional wellness, growth, mindset, leadership, and learning how to move through uncertainty with greater awareness and compassion. Michelle’s story is a powerful reminder that even in life’s hardest moments, people can rediscover purpose, rebuild confidence, and continue moving forward.

In this inspiring conversation, Michelle Bryant Johnson shares insights on grief, mindset, leadership, emotional wellness, resilience, career disruption, self-worth, personal growth, forgiveness, and what it truly means to rise through uncertainty with courage and intention.

Michelle, for those meeting you for the first time, can you share a little about your background and what led you into mindset and leadership work?

Being an avid listener, learner and teacher at heart..., I find human behavior fascinating. This observation throughout my career, volunteering in the community serving and supporting work I care about, and together with my late husband Judge Horace J. Johnson, Jr. raising our two sons, has become more vivid.

First, I'm blessed with a loving beautiful family with values, generations of richness in diverse interests, cultures, and professions. My parents met in college. My dad heard my mom singing in the choir and fell in love. Talented educators, my dad taught high school biology and my mom taught kindergarten. My dad was called to active duty in the Army after I was born. Later, after he returned, our family was blessed with the birth of my sister. Sadly, two weeks after her birth, our mom died suddenly. Our dad was devastated. Supporting our dad through this tragedy,  my mom's sister and her family welcomed me. My dad's sister and our grandmother welcomed my sister.

Eventually, our dad remarried and my sister and I rejoined  our dad with our new bonus mom. Later, we were blessed again with the birth of my baby sister. After a number of years, their marriage ended in divorce. My baby sister stayed with her mom, and my sister and I went to live with our dad. Time went by, blessed again our dad married again and our new bonus mom had a daughter and a son from a previous marriage. They were married for over forty years at the time of our bonus mom's death. Two years later my father passed.

Growing up in the south, family trips, and traveling around the world fuels my curiosity. I earned my undergraduate degree from Historically Black College University (HBCU) Clark Atlanta University. Followed by earning my MBA from Brenau University. My work as a mindset executive coach and corporate HR expert dedicated to building community and talent development for leaders worldwide is a natural evolution of my growth.

Turning my personal grief into purpose, I created the SPARK framework to help others navigate mental health, find inner healing,  and support well-being.

My diverse background spans higher education and non-profit leadership, civic engagement, all focused on supporting wellness and resilience in the workplace.

You’ve spent more than 25 years working in corporate HR, leadership

development, and organizational culture. What are some of the biggest shifts you’ve seen in the workplace over the years?

Some of the biggest shifts I've seen in the workplace, is the acknowledgment of the value of a holistic model of leadership and development.

How did your personal experiences, including the loss of your husband during COVID, shape the way you approach resilience, mindset, and helping others navigate uncertainty?

I created the SPARK framework after the sudden death of my husband from COVID. It's the professional and personal development framework I used to navigate the corporate space as I grieved the loss of my husband. SPARK is an acronym:

S- Self-mindset

P- Permission for Positive Talk

A- Allow Forgiveness

R- Risks-take them!

K- Know your personal brand

Right now, many people are experiencing career disruption, stress, and uncertainty. What do you believe people most need emotionally during these moments?

Acknowledge your feelings, think about what brings you joy, seek help from a source you trust, make a DECISION so you can take action.

I decided I did not want to be sad. That doesn't mean there aren't moments of reflection. I prayerfully choose to celebrate my husband rather than dwell in dispair.

What are some of the most common mistakes people make immediately after unexpected job loss or professional disruption?

Denial, linger in victim mentality.

Consider acknowledging, be honest about how you feel, understand it's a journey, seek help, think positive, nake a decision, take action

I wrote an ebook resource "33 Affirmations for Self-Love and Empowerment". The paperback version is scheduled for release this summer.

I  co-authored "Unshakable Leadership" available on Amazon. It has reached USA Bestseller status!

How can individuals stay grounded, clear, and strategic when fear and uncertainty start taking over?

It's human to feel fear. It can possibly mean you are being stretched. Make a decision, have a plan, seek help, consider not validating your plans with "the world" unless that is the nature of what you want to do.

What advice would you give leaders trying to communicate effectively and compassionately during difficult or uncertain times?

Listen, establish trust, have empathy, be transparent, offer supportive options, ...

What role does mindset play in making effective decisions during stressful moments?

As a man (woman) thinkth, so is he (she).

How you think impacts your progress. Make a decision, seek guidance, take action.

If you could leave readers with one message about resilience, growth, and moving forward through uncertainty, what would you want them to remember?

Everyone may not understand your vision, so  consider not trying to please everyone. Seek guidance, make a decision, take action. Taking action may require a pivot.
