September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, so many of us still remember exactly where we were when the world seemed to stop. We remember the disbelief. The fear and images we could barely comprehend. We remember calling the people we loved and wanting to know they were safe. Most importantly, today we remember the people.

The lives lost. The families who said goodbye that morning without knowing it would be the last time. The first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away. The people who helped strangers. The survivors. The children who grew up without a parent. And all those who have carried the physical and emotional consequences of that day for the past 25 years.

There is something else I hope we remember. In the midst of unimaginable horror, we witnessed extraordinary humanity. People helped people. Strangers became neighbors. We checked on one another. We held doors. We gave blood. We stood together. For a time, the things that divided us seemed so much smaller than the humanity that connected us.

Twenty-five years later, perhaps remembering September 11 also asks something of us:

Remember the humanity that followed it.

See one another.

Help one another.

Disagree without hating one another.

Remember that our time together is precious.

Choose compassion.

Practice Peace and understand that peace doesn't begin somewhere far away. It begins in how we treat the person in front of us.

Today, we remember those whose lives were taken, those who ran toward danger, those who survived, and the families whose lives were forever changed. May we honor them not only with our remembrance, but with the way we live. May we never forget. 9.11.2001

Love to All,

Elizabeth
